We've spent countless hours inside SF City Hall capturing everything from six-minute civil ceremonies to four-hour private weddings, and we know this venue inside and out. What to expect on your SF City Hall Wedding Day

Getting married at SF City Hall is wonderfully simple, but it does have its own rhythm. Here's what a typical wedding day looks like when we're with you:

Before the Ceremony

Most couples arrive ~30 min before their ceremony time. We usually meet you outside or at the bottom of the grand staircase, somewhere quiet where we can do a quick first look (if you'd like one), capture detail shots of your rings and bouquet, and grab a few portraits while the light is good and the building is calmer.

If you're getting your marriage license the same day as your ceremony, plan an extra hour for that appointment in Room 168. We recommend getting your license on a different day if you can. It makes the morning feel less rushed.

The Ceremony

Public civil ceremonies happen at the top of the grand staircase, in the rotunda. They're short, usually about six minutes, and the County Clerk schedules up to two couples in every 30-minute slot, so things move quickly. We'll be right there with you, capturing your vows, the kiss, and the first moments as a married couple.

Private ceremonies on the 4th Floor or the Mayor's Balcony are an entirely different experience. You get an hour, the space is yours, and we have time to slow down.

Portraits

After the ceremony is when the magic happens. We'll guide you to our favorite spots. The grand staircase. The 4th Floor north gallery (best light in the building). The windows on the 3rd Floor. The elevator (yes, really). The front steps. We never rush this part. The whole point of hiring a photographer is to come away with photos you'll actually love, and that takes time and intention.

Post-Ceremony Celebration

Many of our couples head out for a lunch or dinner with family after, sometimes with a stop at a meaningful spot in the city for a few more photos. With our Elevated and Timeless packages, we can be there for those moments too.

Civil Ceremony, Private Ceremony, or Elopement: What's the Difference?

If you're researching SF City Hall weddings for the first time, the terminology can be confusing. Here's a quick breakdown of the three main ways to get married here:

Public Civil Ceremony

This is the most popular option. You book a 30-minute appointment Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 3:30 PM, the ceremony itself is about six minutes long, and it takes place in the rotunda. You're allowed up to six guests total, and that count includes your photographer, videographer, kids, and witnesses. Civil ceremony fees are around $128 (always confirm at sf.gov as they update annually). Our Classic and Elevated packages are designed for this kind of day.

Private One-Hour Ceremony

If you want more guests, more privacy, or just more time, you can book a one-hour private ceremony on the 4th Floor or the Mayor's Balcony. These run about $1,000 through the City Hall Events Department and allow up to 100 guests. The space is yours alone for that hour, which means a much more relaxed pace. Our Timeless package was built for these weddings.

Elopement

An elopement at SF City Hall is really just a small, intentional version of either of the above. Usually a civil ceremony with just the two of you (plus a witness if you have a public marriage license) and your photographer. We love elopements. They're focused, emotional, and unforgettable, and they're often the most genuine weddings we shoot all year.

Note: SF City Hall does not allow walk-in ceremonies. You must book in advance, and ceremony slots open exactly 90 days before your desired date at 9 AM. Popular dates fill up the moment they open.

Best Times to Photograph SF City Hall

After photographing dozens of weddings here, we've learned a few things about timing that can make a real difference:

  • Mornings are quieter. The building opens at 8 AM but ceremonies don't start until 9 AM. Booking early (or arriving early for an afternoon ceremony) means a less crowded rotunda and grand staircase for portraits.

  • Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the calmest days. Mondays are busier (people booking around the weekend), and Fridays tend to fill up. If you have flexibility, mid-week is your friend.

  • The light through the 4th Floor windows is best in the late morning. The north gallery, in particular, gets gorgeous diffused light around 10-11 AM.

  • Saturdays are for private events only. The building is closed to the public, so if you want a Saturday wedding, you'll need to book through the City Hall Events Department for an evening or weekend buyout (these start around $5,000).

  • Avoid major holidays and Pride Friday. They're either closed or extremely busy.

Your Questions, Answered

  • Public civil ceremonies are short, about six minutes from start to finish. The County Clerk schedules them every 30 minutes, with up to two couples per slot. Private one-hour ceremonies on the 4th Floor or Mayor's Balcony give you a full hour in a private space.

    If you’re ready to book - we will send you (1) a service agreement to review and provide e-signatures and (2) an invoice for your preferred photography package with payment options to provide your booking deposit/final payment.

  • For public civil ceremonies, the limit is six guests total, and that includes your photographer, videographer, witnesses, and any children. If you want more guests, you'll need to book a private one-hour ceremony (up to 100 guests) or work with the City Hall Events Department for a larger event.

  • It depends on what kind of marriage license you have. With a public marriage license, yes, you need at least one witness, and City Hall does not provide one. With a confidential marriage license, no witness is required. If you don't have a witness, let us know. We've witnessed plenty of ceremonies for couples who needed one.

  • Absolutely, and we recommend it. We usually meet you 30-45 minutes before your ceremony to capture detail shots, a first look if you'd like one, and a few portraits before things get busy. With our Elevated and Timeless packages, this pre-ceremony time is built into the coverage.

  • Our favorites are the grand staircase, the 4th Floor north gallery (the light there is unbeatable), the arched windows on the 3rd Floor, the rotunda from above, and the wood-paneled elevators. We'll guide you through our shot list so you don't have to worry about a thing.

  • Wear what makes you feel like the truest version of yourself. We've photographed everything from full lace gowns to vintage suits to jeans and a white dress. Bring as little as possible: ID, your marriage license, your rings, and personal items only. The building is busy and there's nowhere to set things down. Comfortable shoes for walking between locations are always a good idea.

    Galleries will also have their own unique password to ensure privacy.

  • Yes, and we love when couples want to extend the day. Civic Center, the Painted Ladies at Alamo Square, Lombard Street, Chinatown. There are so many beautiful spots in the city. Our "Additional Location" add-on covers same-day coverage at one extra location.

  • We recommend booking your photographer as soon as you have a confirmed ceremony date. SF City Hall ceremony slots open exactly 90 days in advance and popular dates go fast. We book up just as quickly for Spring and Fall weekends. If your date is more than a few months out, reaching out early lets us hold the date for you.

  • Yes. We're based in Oakland and serve the entire Bay Area, and we're always happy to travel further for the right couple. If you're planning a City Hall ceremony followed by a celebration in Napa, the coast, or anywhere else, let's talk.
