BAY AREA MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY
Outdoor and Lifestyle Maternity Sessions Across San Francisco and the Bay Area
Pregnancy is its own kind of season. The body changes daily. Time stretches and compresses in strange ways. The version of you carrying this baby right now exists only for a few weeks, and then she's someone else.
We're Mario and Lina, a husband-and-wife photography team based in Oakland. Maternity sessions with us are documentary in style and unhurried in pace. We're at our best with clients who actually want to be there. Clients who feel ready to mark this moment, who want photos that look like them rather than a styled version of someone else. The session is yours. The pace is yours. Our job is to be there with cameras and pay attention.
How Our Maternity Sessions Feel
Most maternity photography is heavily styled. Long flowy dresses, dramatic poses, hands held a specific way over the belly. We don't work that way.
Our sessions are documentary, which means we follow what's already happening rather than choreographing it. We'll suggest a starting point and a general direction, but the goal is to give you room to actually be in your body. Walking together. Sitting together. Hands resting where they want to rest. The partner who keeps reaching for the belly without realizing it. The older kid who climbs into the picture. These are the photos that feel like you when you look back at them in ten years.
Practically, this means our sessions move at a pace that respects what your body is doing. Ninety minutes feels generous, not rushed. We build in time to sit, to rest, to drink water, to change wardrobes if you brought a second outfit. We pick locations with comfort in mind: easy parking, short walks, places to sit. If you need to take a break at any point, take it. We're not on the clock with you. The session is what it needs to be.
Sessions We Love
A few kinds of maternity sessions we especially love photographing:
Golden Hour Maternity Sessions
The hour before sunset is the most beautiful light we have to work with in the Bay Area, and it's particularly flattering for maternity work. The warm low light wraps around the body. Backgrounds glow. Everything softens. We usually meet you about 90 minutes before sunset, which gives us enough time to start in slightly cooler light, work through the golden hour itself, and finish as the sky begins to turn. Partners and existing kids are welcome in any or all of the session. This is the most popular style we shoot and the easiest entry point if you're not sure what kind of session you want.
Lifestyle Maternity Sessions
Less about a single magical hour, more about real life. We meet at a place that means something to your family. The trail you walk on weekends. The cafe you've been going to since the pregnancy started. The grandparents' backyard. We photograph an hour or two of real time spent in your real life. These sessions work especially well for clients who want photos that feel less like a portrait shoot and more like a memory of this particular chapter. They're quieter, slower, and often the photos clients tell us they love most a year later.
Nature and Outdoor Maternity Sessions
The Bay Area has some of the best landscape backdrops for maternity work in the country. Hills, fields, beaches, coastline. Quiet light through eucalyptus. Bay views with the city in the distance. These sessions emphasize the natural environment around you and tend to feel more cinematic. We'll work with you to pick a location that fits both the look you're after and your comfort level (some of our favorite outdoor spots require a 5-minute walk from parking; some require less). Particularly beautiful in spring when the hills are green and in early fall when the light turns warm.
The photos turned out stunning—so many beautiful images to choose from. Their work truly feels like art, and we want to blow up every shot to hang in our home and cherish forever. Can’t wait for them to shoot our holiday photos this year and every year. We couldn’t recommend them more!

Locations We Love (and Yours, Too)
Crissy Field and the Presidio in San Francisco, for couples who want the Golden Gate as a backdrop
The Berkeley and Oakland hills, for that warm light over the bay
Tilden Park, for an easy walk in a beautiful natural setting
Ocean Beach and the Outer Sunset, for foggy, atmospheric sessions
Lands End, when you want something a little more dramatic
The Marin Headlands, when you're up for the drive (best at golden hour)
Your neighborhood, your favorite walking trail, the place this baby is already becoming part of
That last one matters to us. Some of our favorite maternity sessions have happened at places clients brought us. A favorite hiking trail. A picnic spot the couple has been going to since they started dating. If there's a place that means something to your family, we'd love to shoot there.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Most clients book their session between 28 and 34 weeks. By 28 weeks the belly is visibly defined; by 34 weeks you're closer to delivery and may be feeling more tired or less mobile. Both are flexible. We've shot beautiful sessions as early as 24 weeks and as late as 37 weeks. The right window depends on how you're feeling and what you want the photos to capture. Book early if you can. Sessions for second or third pregnancies sometimes happen earlier because clients know what they want.
-
Wear what makes you feel like yourself, not what looks like a maternity stock photo. Some general guidance: form-fitting works better than tent-like (the goal is to show the shape, not hide it). Soft, natural colors photograph better than bright primary colors. Patterns can work but tend to date faster than solids. If you have a partner in the session, coordinated but not matching is the right note. If you're not sure, send us a couple of options before the session and we'll talk through it. Bringing a second outfit is often a good idea, especially for longer sessions.
-
Yes, and we encourage it. Some of the best maternity photos we've taken aren't of the pregnant person alone but of the partnership. The hands resting together. The forehead pressed to the belly. The quiet looks. If your partner is hesitant about being in front of the camera, let us know and we'll work in ways that feel natural for them.
-
For outdoor sessions, the hour before sunset (golden hour) is what we recommend by default. The light is the most flattering you'll find. Morning sessions are also beautiful, particularly for lifestyle work, and tend to be a better fit for clients who feel best earlier in the day. We'll match the timing to what works for your body.
-
Of course. We love photographing existing kids in maternity sessions, especially when they're old enough to understand what's coming. Plan for shorter, looser sessions when older kids are involved (their attention spans are the limiting factor), and don't expect every photo to include them. Some of the most meaningful frames are the ones where they're just doing their thing in the background while we photograph you.
-
Yes. We have a fur baby add-on for this exact reason. Bring them along.
-
Honest answer: only book if you want them. We've worked with clients who were initially hesitant and ended up loving their photos, and we've worked with clients who really weren't sure and felt awkward during the session. The difference is usually how the client showed up. If part of you wants this and part of you feels weird about it, that's normal. If most of you doesn't want this, wait or skip it. Maternity photos exist to mark a meaningful moment, not to check a box.
-
Absolutely. Tell us about it. Some of our favorite sessions have happened at places clients chose because of personal meaning rather than because they were scenic. The picnic spot where the partner proposed. The trail the family walks every Sunday. The cafe where the pregnancy was first announced. Let us know what you have in mind.
